While primarily the timing belts were mainly seen as a substitution for gear transmissions, the utilization rapidly developed as well into positioning or conveying applications. It is easy to see that for power transmission applications (like camshaft drives of car motors, etc.) seamless belts with high duty tooth profiles are the most appropriate solution.

However for conveying and positioning applications long belts, which are commonly joined or with mechanically fixed belt ends, are needed. Therefore, these are typical applications for endless extruded timing belts. For these belts the power transmission capability is often rather marginal, but other options like the possibility to apply specific coatings or cleats, etc. are of key importance in many applications.

According to these different utilizations the timing belts can be subdivided into three groups:

· Power transmission
· Positioning
· Conveying


Power transmission

Applications with the focus on power transmission, seamless belts with wound to length traction members out of steel, glass, aramide or carbon cords, embedded in rubber or polyurethane, are state of the art. Curvilinear “high duty” tooth shapes are commonly used.

Positioning

In positioning applications the belts have very often mechanically fixed belt ends. Therefore expensive seamless belts are not required. However, also here high torques are common. Thus, extruded belts with steel or aramide cords, embedded in thermoplastic polyurethane, are state of the art. Also here curvilinear “high duty” tooth shapes are commonly used.

Conveying

Timing belts are often used if conveyed good has to be placed or indexed precisely. In these applications the focus is mostly on the freedom of design like the suitability for welded-on cleats and flights, surfaces with high or low friction, high flexibility in terms of fabrication (belt length, coatings with different materials, colours and structures). High driving torque is mostly not a main task. These are the typical applications for belts cut to width and joined to length and to be customized with covers, holes, flights, profiles, etc. Since these belts run in many cases over slider beds, the tooth profile with flattened tips are mostly preferred for these applications.
