鋼邊橡膠止水帶系以一般可伸縮的橡膠和兩邊配有鍍鋅鋼邊所組成的復合件。這種止水帶主要靠中間的橡膠段在混凝土變形縫間被壓縮或拉伸，而起到密封止水作用。一般來說，混凝土和橡膠的粘附力較差，在常規施工中，又因橡膠是柔軟彈性體，使混凝土在澆筑時不易被掏實，故在混凝土接縫膨脹，扯離、扭轉時會經常出現橡膠止水帶松動和脫落，以致在水頭壓力較高情況下會產生滲漏現象。對于變形縫大的接縫來說，問題就更為突出。采用鍍鋅鋼邊橡膠復合式止水帶，基本上可以克服純橡膠橋式止水帶的這些不足。而且這種復合式止水帶還具有雙重功能，即一方面可以延長途徑，延緩滲水速度，另一方面鍍鋅鋼邊和混凝土有著良好的粘附性，使止水帶能承受較大的拉力和扭力，從而保證橡膠止水帶的混凝土中的有效變形范圍內不會產生松動和脫落現象，提高止水效果。鋼邊橡膠止水帶選用鍍鋅鋼邊；橡膠：通常選用天然橡膠、氯丁橡膠、三元乙丙橡膠等。要求橡膠和鋼邊能有效地粘結，它們之間的粘結強度（剝離強度）應達80~10N/2.5mm，以使它們在外界條件變化情況下不被拉脫。通常鋼邊邊緣沒有工藝孔，安裝澆筑混凝土時，利用工藝將止水帶和鋼邊用細鐵絲纏繞固定，以保證澆搗密實，使鍍鋅鋼片和混凝土有效地牢固粘附。本產品主要用于混凝土現澆時設在施工縫及變形縫內與混凝土結構成為一體的基礎工程，如地下設施、隧道涵洞、輸水渡槽、攔水壩、貯液構筑物等。
