12CrNi3鋼屬于合金滲碳鋼，比12CrNi2A鋼有更高的淬透性，因此，可以用于制造比12CrNi2A鋼截面稍大的零件。該鋼含碳量較低，加入鎳、鉻合金元素，一提高鋼的淬透性和滲碳層的強韌性，尤其是鎳，在產生固溶強化的同時，明顯增加鋼的塑韌性。與其他冷成型塑料模具鋼相比，該鋼的冷成性屬于中等。

該鋼淬火低溫回火或高溫回火后都具有良好的綜合力學性能，鋼的低溫韌性好，缺口敏感性小，切削加工性能良好，當硬度為HB260～320時，相對切削加工性為60%～70另外，鋼退火后硬度低、塑性好，因此，既可以采用切削加工方法制造模具，也可以采用冷擠壓成型方法制造模具。為提高模具型腔的耐磨性，模具成型后需要進行滲碳處理，然后再進行淬火和低溫回火，從而保證模具表面具有高硬度、高耐磨性而心部具有很好的韌性，該鋼適宜制造大、中型塑料模具。但該鋼有回火脆性傾向和形成白點的傾向。
